Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Tuesday, June 16th, 2020. This week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we are talking about the Second Commandment, You shall not take the Lord God's

0:35.1

name in vain. Yesterday, we went all the way back to Moses and his first

0:40.2

conversation with God in the burning bush, where God revealed that his name is I am who am.

0:46.6

And this very sacred, incredible way of knowing God, his name is so revered by the Jewish people at that time and continuing on to today

0:56.7

that they never speak this name except for once a year by the high priest. Now, let's skip forward

1:04.1

in history to the birth of Jesus Christ. From the very moment that we hear that Jesus, that God made man, will enter the world,

1:14.6

we know his name. The angel comes to Mary and says to her, behold, you will conceive in your

1:22.6

womb and bear a son and you shall name him Jesus. So we have this name for God himself. Now, we have talked

1:32.8

on this podcast many times about how God, who was infinite, who was there at the beginning of the world,

1:40.4

how he had to humble himself so much to become a human being that he let go of that power

1:48.0

and took on this this weak form of a human and not only that but he was born poor and he entered

1:54.8

the world as a tiny embryo in the womb of the Virgin Mary but there's so many other ways to understand the way that God

2:03.1

humbled himself. And one of those ways is that he took a name. Now, having a name is an interesting

2:11.7

thing. Go back to Adam and Eve in the garden. God created all of these animals and then he created Adam and he told Adam to name the animals.

2:22.8

Now, it wasn't just that God was lazy and couldn't think of names.

2:26.5

He gave this job specifically to Adam to demonstrate that Adam was above the animals,

2:33.7

that he was basically an owner or controller of the

2:37.8

animals. Because when we name something, we exercise control over it. Who gave you your name?

2:46.9

Well, your parents most likely gave you your name. They picked a name.

2:52.5

Maybe it's a saint's name or a family name or meaningful in some other way.

2:57.8

But they picked this name for you because they want to shape you in a certain way.
