Today is Wednesday, January 29th, 2020.

This week on the Catholic Sprout's podcast, we are talking about the sacrament of confirmation.

We've already talked about how the sacrament of confirmation is a personal Pentecost and a public adult yes to the Holy Spirit and to the church.

Yesterday we talked about the four things that happen at a confirmation, and today we are going

to drill down into these five baptismal promises that we will stand up

and publicly declare our belief in when we are confirmed.

So the first promise that we will declare yes to is this.

Do you reject Satan and all of his works and all of his empty promises? So in order for us to say what we believe and what we stand for, we have to first

of all say what we refuse to stand for. And what we refuse to stand for is Satan,

all of his lies, all of the ways that he tempts us and tries to lead us away from Jesus.

Now, this, of course, is a bigger statement. When we are confirmed and we stand and say, I reject Satan

and all of his works and all of his empty promises, what we are really saying is that we are

determined to live a radical life. We are determined to live differently than the world lives.

To not do what we see in movies and TV and in magazines.

We are determined to live differently.

Instead of seeking wealth, power, honor, and pleasure, those are the things that the world tells us is so important.

That's what the world tells us that we should be spending our lives pursuing.

But when we stand up and say, I reject Satan all of his works and all of his empty promises.

We are saying, I know I won't be happy if I just try to get money and power. And instead, we are going to stand up, look up at the

crucifix, which is somewhere in your parish. And you are going to say, I reject what Satan
