Today is Thursday, December 19th, 2019.

This week, we are talking about the prophets as we continue through Advent and follow along with the Jesse tree.

We've talked about the prophet Isaiah. Yesterday we talked about Jeremiah and Jonah. And with all of these prophets, they were begging people to repent.

Both Jeremiah and Isaiah were very clear that if they did not repent and change their ways,

there would be a terrible consequence.

And that consequence is that a foreign power, namely Persia and Babylon, would come in,

conquer the nation, destroy their city, burn down the temple, and take them all away as slaves.

Now, this happened. It happened about a hundred years after Isaiah

prophesied about it. The whole nation was conquered and taken away as slaves. And thus began a new chapter

in Jewish history, and that is called the Babylonian exile. All of the Jews, especially the important ones, were taken to the country of Babylon.

And there, they lived either as slaves or servants under a Babylonian king.

At the time, the Babylonian kings believed that they had actually descended from heaven,

and that they as king were actually the almighty God.

As you can imagine, this led to all sorts of corruption and evil,

because the king thought that they could do whatever they wanted,

ones that could decide what was right and wrong. So it was in this environment that God called up

another prophet. And that prophet, his name was Daniel. Now likely you know about the prophet
