Today is also the feast day of a doctor of the church, St. Catherine of Siena.

determined to live a life of prayer and fasting to grow closer to Jesus.

And then she was so prayerful.

In fact, she experienced many mystical visions as she prayed.

In one of them, she became the bride of Christ.

And in another vision, she received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. Although these wounds hurt her

of the plague. Eventually, she left her little hermit cell where she was praying and went to go

serve plague victims with her own hands. It was also a time of

chaos and division. At the time when St. Catherine of Siena was alive, the Pope had left Rome and

lived in Avignon, France. He was living there, sort of more like a king, and Italy was falling

without the Pope where he should be in Rome. So Catherine of Siena left Sietta. She went to
