Summary

This week on Catholic Sprouts, Catherine DiNuzzo (a Catholic Licensed Professional Counselor) will take the children through a very basic understanding of living mental wellness, including understanding their feelings (helping them to know that feelings are good and that they can be expressed). She also goes through an age-appropriate understanding of how the body and brain function regarding fears and scary things. Catherine connects the dots by sharing good physical ways to utilize the senses and physical movement to calm the body (heart, stomach, and brain) as well as how special the gift of the Church is for our spiritual mental wellness, and how God always knew exactly what we needed. *Catherine purposefully left out the term “anxiety” because it frequently becomes a label that a child may too easily associate with.

Mon: What mental wellnes is and understanding our feelings.

Tue: How our brains and feelings work together.

Wed: Tangible, physical strategies to help us work through and manage our feelings.

Thu: How the Church helps us understand and live out mental wellness.

Fri: How to talk to others about our feelings.

Hello! I'm Catherine DiNuzzo, a Catholic speaker, Licensed Professional Counselor, and author of the Catholicbest-seller “The Catholic Guide Through Anxiety”. I am also a mother of 4 teenagers, navigating the trenches with my husband as we strive to raise our kids into saints! I want to provide you with resources, tools, and information to help you grow in your faith and mental wellness. Over on my website, SacredHeartMentalWellness.com, we've provided free resources and information specifically for Catholic Sprouts parents, as well as some products and options to help tackle the realities of raising children in our culture where actually experiencing mental wellness is so difficult.

Hey there, sprouts. I'm Catherine DeNuto, your guest host this week. Today is Thursday,

April 10, 2025, the feast of St. Michael DeSanctus. This week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we are discussing mental wellness. Today, we are going to

talk about the beautiful ways that our church incorporates all the things that we need for our mental

wellness. A lot of times when I'm working with people, they tell me that they can't bring any of

0:53.4

their feelings to God, that the church

0:55.8

is not a place for feelings or a place to bring your hardships or a place to feel the waves of life.

1:03.5

But I'm here to challenge that thought. I want to show you how our church was built knowing

1:09.2

our mental health, that it was built by a God who not only loves us

1:13.7

so much and wants to give us everything that we need, but also a God who knows us and knows what we

1:19.8

need. Let's think about the last couple of days, and we've been talking a lot about the animal

brain and the thinking brain, and how the only way to calm that

1:28.8

animal brain is to use our senses. Now I want you to take a moment to imagine what it's like

when you go to mass. Think of all the things that you see and hear and smell, even the fact that

you get to stand up and sit down, those are all very physical

ways that our animal brain is calmed by the beauty of our mass. What a gift from a God who loves us so

much. God also gave us a beautiful mother in our mother Mary and in the gift of the rosary. This is a prayer

that is calming, repetitive. It almost has the sound and feel of a mom rocking us to sleep.

God knew that we were going to have moments when we had fears or worries or just lots of feelings

and we needed a place to take those feelings.
