I'm sure I don't need to tell you that today is also St. Valentine's Feastay.

St. Valentine was a real person.

Tradition tells us that he was both a priest and a physician.

He lived in Rome during the time of the persecution, dying in the year 269.

Now, it's not quite clear why he was arrested, but it was certainly for practicing his faith.

Some believe that he was arrested for performing the marriages of Roman soldiers.

Now, at the time, it wasn't only illegal for Roman soldiers to be Christian.

It was also forbidden for them to be married.

So this is perhaps the reason why he was first arrested or first discovered for his faith. He was placed in jail where tradition tells us that through his prayer, he was able to heal

the blindness of his jailer's daughter.

Despite this, he was beaten and beheaded, dying a martyr for the faith.

And so today, as you exchange valentines with each other or eat Valentine candy,

I encourage you to remember what true love is, demonstrated by the martyrdom of St. Valentine.
