Today we celebrate the feast day and of an amazing saint who was a champion at slaying the blue

dragon of wrath. St. Josephine Bakita was born in Sudan in the year of our Lord 1869, and at the

age of seven she was kidnapped and sold into slavery. Her captors gave her the name

Bakita, which means fortunate. That is kind of ironic because being kidnapped as a little girl

seems very unfortunate, but we know that God has an amazing way of using something meant for evil

and turning it into something good. She was severely beaten and

mistreated by several of her slave owners and resold several times before being sold to an Italian

consul who took her to Italy and gave her to a friend. That friend placed her in the custody of

the Kenosian sisters in Venice, and it was there that she learned about

God and felt drawn to the Catholic faith. When her owners tried to take her back, she refused,

and a court ruling decided that she was free and was allowed to make her profession of faith

and join the sisters, where she lived out her days as a cook and doorkeeper at the convent.
