Egypt, the father of monastic life. It is just so fitting that his feast day would fall today

as we conclude our conversation about monastic life. He did so much to form what modern day

monastic life looks like, not only through his writings and teachings, but also through his life. And so today we're

going to read the story of St. Anthony of Egypt found in the history of the Catholic Church

told through the lives of the saints, volume one. But before we start that, please join me in

praying a glory be. In the name of the Father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen glory be

to the father to the son and to the holy spirit as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be

amen so here is the story of st anthony Anthony of Egypt found in the history of the Catholic

Church told through the lives of the saints. Anthony sat on a bare rock at the entrance of a shallow

cave. Looking out over the valley below, his eyes followed the winding river glowing red

and gold in the light of the setting sun.

For nearly 20 years, he had sat here on the stone, all that time living alone in a cave on top of a desolate mountain.

Just as the river continued to flow and the sun to set, Anthony remained alone and prayerful

before God. A sharp hunger pain rippled through his body, but Anthony did not flinch. Mentally,
