Today we're going to reflect on

what it means when we say the blood of the martyrs was the seat of the church, because today we

celebrate the feast day of some amazingly courageous missionaries and martyrs, St. John Debrough,

and St. Isaac Jogues and companions. So I'd like to tell you their stories, and in doing so,

I want you to listen to see if you can identify which dragons these missionaries slayed.

They were Jesuit missionaries from France, who were sent to Canada to preach the gospel to the Indians of North America.

Now, I must warn you, their stories are difficult to hear because they suffered so much.

But knowing what the Saints of Ages Pass endured to share the good news of the gospel to the

earth can inspire us to live our faith today.

Jesus told his first disciples, you will be my witnesses.

And the word witness actually means martyr.

These Jesuit missionaries had a challenging mission for many reasons, and success was

slow to come because the odds were

stacked against them. They had to learn a whole new language just to communicate, and many of the

Indians viewed them as a member of a conquering race, and so they were met with great suspicion.
