And today we celebrate St. Dennis and Companions.

My name is Father Andrew Hamilton of the Diocese of Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

St. Dennis died in 258 AD and was martyred for his faith.

He was born and raised in Italy, and then he was sent as a missionary to Gaul, or what we now call France, by Pope St. Clement.

There he would set up his missionary base around the modern city of Paris. For this reason,

he is known as the first bishop of Paris and the apostle of France. He was then later captured

by pagans, and they would put him to death for preaching the gospel. Very famously, St. Dennis was beheaded and often he is depicted

holding his head in his hands, for there is a great legendary story that after he was beheaded,

St. Dennis picked up his head off the ground and he carried it four miles up a hill, preaching

the gospel the whole way.

Saints are always able to laugh, even in the face of darkness and death,

because they know that the victory is already theirs in Christ.

And so, as a bit of humor, St. Dennis is remembered as the patron saint of headaches, because he lost

his head but didn't lose his life. St. Dennis preached the cross and he lived out the cross. Today,

Sprouts, we are going to go over the sign of the cross as a witness and as a symbol of our faith.
