Today we celebrate the feast of St. Lawrence,

an early Christian martyr who died around the year 258. St. Lawrence was a deacon in the church in Rome,

and his duties included caring for the church's goods and almsgiving, which he administered

generously because he was very good at slaying the green dragon of greed. He's very close to Pope St. Sixtus

the 2nd and was martyred a few days after the Pope under the persecution of Valerian. Not a lot of

facts are known about Lawrence, but legend says that after the Pope was martyred, he knew he would

soon be martyred as well, so he distributed all the church's wealth to the poor. The prefect of Rome demanded he

gather the treasures of the church and bring it to him. So Lawrence gathered all the poor and sick

people and told the prefect of Rome that they were the treasures of the church. Well, the

prefect didn't find this very funny, and he was upset, so he ordered that St. Lawrence be

barbecued to death. He was placed on a hot grill,

and in the most famous legend of Lawrence, it has said that after being placed on the hot

gridiron for some time, Lawrence humorously quipped, uh, I think I'm done on this side. You can turn
