Today is Monday, July 1st, 2004. Today is also the feast day of St. Oliver Plunkett. Now, St. Oliver

Plunkett lived in the 1600s in Ireland. And if you know church history just a little bit,

you know that this was a very dangerous time for Catholics in Great Britain, particularly in Ireland.

So St. Oliver Plunkett felt the call to the priesthood. He studied for the priesthood, but then went to

Rome, where he continued to study. He was ordained, and he eventually was named the Archbishop of all of Ireland. Now this was taking

place during the Irish Rebellion when Catholics in Ireland were fighting for their right to be Catholic

because the English Reformation had happened. England had broken with the Catholic Church, and they were trying to

eradicate Catholicism all throughout Great Britain, including Ireland. But the Irish Catholics

held tight to their faith. And part of that is because of good leadership, in particular,
