Today is Thursday, March 7th, 2020.

We are still in Lent and still talking about the heroic witness of the martyrs.

Today we have a very famous martyr from the early church, St.

Lawrence, who perhaps has the most iconic,

final phrase ever uttered by a saint. But we'll get there in just a moment. Please join me today

in our Lenton prayer, St. Peter's Chains. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

O God, who caused St. Peter the Apostle to depart, loose from his chains and unhurt,

loose, we beg you, the chains of our sins, and graciously keep all evils far from us bless us this

lent and give us the faith of the martyrs we ask this in the mighty name of jesus christ amen so st lawrence

lived in the two hundreds and if you haven't learned this yet, just a reminder that the church

suffered terrible persecution from the Roman Empire up until the 300s. So St. Lawrence lived

during these very hard years, years where many of the popes were killed as martyrs. There were some popes that

served a very short amount of time. And so just many heroic witnesses to the faith. The faith

continued to grow because of these witnesses. And St. Lawrence's example was just celebrated and brought about many

conversions even shortly after he died of martyr. So we don't know anything about St. Lawrence's

early life, but we do know that shortly before he died, Pope 6thus 2nd ordained him a deacon.

Now, perhaps you have a deacon serving at your parish, but we know that this is a sacrament,

that they have an indelible mark on their soul, that they have been changed, and that through
