Summary

To celebrate the release of THE CATHOLIC PARENT on FORMED, a video series we have been working on for the past year with the Augustine Institute, we are spending this week discussing the Precepts of the Church. THE CATHOLIC PARENT showcases the unique and beautiful way that Catholic Families live out the Precepts of the Church...but what are the Precepts of the Church?

+ MONDAY: Attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation

+ TUESDAY: Attend Confession at least once a year.

+ WEDNESDAY: Receive the Eucharist at least once a year.

+ THURSDAY: Observe Days of Fasting and Abstinence

+ FRIDAY: Provide for the Needs of the Church

Today is also the feast day of St. Anthony, the Great, also known as St. Anthony of

Egypt.

St. Anthony lived in the 300th in Egypt, as you might have guessed,

and he is often heralded as the father of monastic life.

As a young man, he gave away all of his possessions

and went out to the desert to live as a hermit.

He lived there for 20 years and really discovered the beautiful call

of silence, which is the foundation of monastic life, even as we know it today. After 20 years out there

fasting and praying, he came into Alexandria, Egypt, to fight heretics, to advise emperors, and to help the new

Christian church, which had recently been recognized at the Church of the Roman Empire, become

established, and really care about the personal holiness of its members.

St. Anthony of Egypt calls us all to a deeper prayer life

and to really investigate what God has to say to us individually.
