Summary

It's the third week of Advent (and time to light the pink candle!). Join us as we discuss joy this week.

+ MONDAY: The pink candle in our Advent wreaths is also known as the Shepherd's Candle. Find out why this is fitting.

+ TUESDAY: Joy is not quite a virtue--instead it is a FRUIT of living the virtues.

+ WEDNESDAY: God created us to be happy...but what is true happiness (joy)?

+ THURSDAY: The opposite of joy is selfish sadness. Why does focusing on others (and not myself) lead to joy?

+ FRIDAY: We are so close to Christmas! Today you are challenged to stop thinking about what you are "getting" and instead spend time thinking about how you can be a "giver" instead.

ANNOUNCEMENT: There will be no new episodes of the podcast next week! See you after the New Year!

Hey there, sprouts. Today is Tuesday, December 19th, 2020. This week, we are talking about joy, the virtue that we reflect on the third week of Advent. But before we get there, please join me in praying the family prayer for Advent,

0:39.7

which we are learning this month in the Be a Saint Kids Club. In the name of the Father and of the

0:45.3

Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. God of love, your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us. He is a sign of your love. Help us walk in that love

0:59.6

during the weeks of Advent as we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus,

1:06.3

our Savior, amen. So yesterday we started talking about joy and how it's so interesting that we're

1:14.6

also lighting the shepherd candle this week. Now today we are going to look at the example of

St. Paul. St. Paul was a very joyful guy despite the many hardships and struggles that he faced. So a little

1:31.8

bit about St. Paul. St. Paul was a Jew. He, in fact, was a Pharisee. And if you remember from

1:39.5

the gospel stories, oftentimes Pharisees were more concerned with the rules than they were concerned

1:46.4

with a relationship with God. And they most certainly, on the most part, many of them did not

1:54.0

become followers of Jesus. In fact, St. Paul never even probably met Jesus before he died, but as a young man,

2:03.3

he became involved in ending the Christian faith. In fact, he was probably present when

2:10.8

St. Stephen, the first martyr for the faith, was stoned death. And we know that he set out

2:16.8

for the city of Damascus, given orders from

2:20.4

the temple leaders to go there, find the Christians, and bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.

2:27.2

However, on the road to Damascus, a bright light suddenly shone, he was knocked from his horse, and out of this light a voice spoke.

2:39.4

The voice asked, Saul, which was Paul's name before, Saul, why are you persecuting my people?

2:48.5

And of course, he recognized that this was Jesus Christ. He was cast blind. He was led

2:54.4

into the city of Damascus, where he lay in bed sick for days until a Christian follower came,
