| 0:30.5 | Hey there, sprouts. Today is Friday, October 27th, 2003. Today is also the feast day of an important French saint from the 15 and 1600's St. Vincent de Paul. Maybe that name sounds familiar. Maybe somewhere |
| 0:41.3 | where you live, there's a St. Vincent de Paul Society or store where you can go and get |
| 0:47.4 | reuse things or you can go and help support those who are poor and struggling. Well, the reason why those stores exist is because |
| 0:57.0 | St. Vincent de Paul gave his life in service of the poor and those who were suffering. But that |
| 1:04.8 | actually wasn't always his story. St. Vincent de Paul grew up the child of a poor and struggling farmer. |
| 1:12.4 | He decided to go and become a priest simply because he thought he would have a comfortable and wealthy life as a priest, which is sort of how it worked out for him at the beginning. |
| 1:23.8 | His first assignment was to serve a very wealthy woman, but he had a series of big moments in his life that led to a deeper conversion, a more full embracing of his vocation, and giving his life to the poor. |

| 1:46.7 | pirates and everyone on board was then taken to North Africa and sold as slaves. So St. Vincent de Paul |
| 1:55.1 | spent a couple of years of his life as a slave. During that time, he really fell in love with Jesus. He actually converted |
| 2:02.6 | his owner to Christianity. He escaped. He went back. And in the years to come, he raised |
| 2:10.3 | tons of money to ransom Christian slaves, just like he had been. And in the end, he procured the freedom of over 1,200 |
| 2:20.7 | Christian slaves. He also did many other remarkable things, including founding orphanages and |
| 2:27.8 | hospitals. He also really cared for the individual. Now, at the time when he was alive, |
| 2:34.1 | there were slaves on ships |
| 2:36.5 | called galley slaves. So if you can picture a big ship with a whole bunch of oars sticking out |
| 2:43.4 | the bottom of it, those people would be chained to their ore, and they were slaves forced to paddle |
| 2:50.4 | these massive boats. So regularly, St. Vincent DePaul |
| 2:54.8 | would go and minister to these people. And a couple of times, some of the men who were galley slaves |
