Rowland on Catholic Sprouts where every Saturday we discuss the art of dragon slain. Last week, we had a

discussion on fire and how

fire is kind of like free will. It can be used for great good, such as providing warmth and light,

preparing food, and revealing goodness, beauty, and truth in how it looks, sounds, and smells.

Fire is one of my favorite things when it comes to all of my five senses. What I didn't mention

last week is that fire is a symbol

of the Holy Spirit, as at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to the disciples and tongues of fire.

The Holy Spirit is what floods our souls with God's grace and gives us the power to do things we

couldn't possibly do on our own, namely to become saints. But remember, the best, when corrupted, often becomes the worst.

We can use our free will to do great good in work and cooperation with the Holy Spirit,

just as fire has the power to do great good. But we can also use our free will to do terrible

evil in cooperation with dragons, just as fire has the power to destroy and inflict unimaginable suffering

dragon fire. We can take what is good and true and beautiful and turn it into something evil,

false, and ugly. And so today, I'd like to delve deeper into the first dragon slain maxim that

we mentioned in conjunction with the red dragon of pride. The first maxim is foundational to Dragon Slaying and is a great way

to close the month of August when we've been discussing the virtue of humility in the Catholic Sprouts

Clubhouse and the Be a Saint Kids Club. I also thought since many of you are probably starting back to

school, this Maxim will help you have a successful school year and fight against the dragons that
