Today is the feast day of St. Charles Longa and companions. St. Charles was one of

by the violet dragon of lust that we have been discussing. Rather than defile their bodies at the

king's demands, these martyrs, much like our legendary slayer we heard from last week,

St. Philomena, they chose to die instead, winning the crown of martyrdom in their place in the

kingdom of heaven. By their witness, many people have come to Christ, and St. Charles is considered

the patron of Catholic youth and Catholic action in most of tropical Africa. So what was the mighty

weapon that St. Charles and St. Philomena used to

slay the violet dragon of lust that we have named Agaba? Chastity. The catechism says that chastity is the

form of all virtues because it means to live as a witness of God's fidelity and loving kindness. Jesus is

the perfect model of chastity as he offered his body as a living sacrifice

to save all of us from our sins. He teaches us how to treat others and ourselves with dignity and

respect. God is love, and Jesus is the very image of that love. He calls himself a bridegroom

who lays down his life for his bride, which is the church. We as the church receive

God's love through the sacraments, and then we share that love with the whole world. We are made in
