Summary

Our patron of this month was a humble doorkeeper and yet, through simply opening the door and responding to the needs of those he greeted, St. Andre Bessette shows us how important it is to practice hospitality, especially for those most in need. This week we will discuss hospitality in the Old Testament, Jesus's practice of hospitality, and how our salvation depends on our own practice of hospitality.

You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:32.1

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Tuesday, January 24th, 2003. Today is also the feast day of St. Francis Sales. St. Francis to Sales.

0:39.9

St. Francis de Sales is an incredible saint from the 1600s. We still have many of his spiritual writings that help us,

0:47.2

especially those of us who are the lay people, to truly live out holiness. But St. Francis Seales was an incredibly amazing saint. He lived during the Protestant Reformation when many

0:53.9

Christians were breaking away from the

0:56.1

true church and forming other denominations. St. Francis's sale fearlessly went into areas

1:03.8

that are now Switzerland, and he preached the true faith to people that were practicing

1:09.4

the Calvinist denomination. And he met tons of violence

1:14.7

and tons of resistance. And yet he kept on even when his life was threatened. And thousands of

1:21.5

people were brought back into the true church through his work. So he's an awesome saint.

1:27.2

So we are going to talk about hospitality, but before we

1:30.4

get there, let's begin by memorizing Deuteronomy chapter six verses four through nine. In the name of the

1:38.6

father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. Here, O Israel, the Lord is your God, the Lord is one.

1:47.7

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

1:54.9

These words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart,

1:58.8

and you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of

2:03.0

them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.

2:09.6

Amen. So hospitality. Yesterday we talked about how Abraham welcomed three guests who turned out

2:17.4

to be messengers from God, and how a host has

2:20.8

a sacred duty to provide for the needs of a guest, and a guest has a duty to accept. Today, we're

2:27.5

going to look into the New Testament specifically at Jesus. Now, as you likely know, during Jesus'

2:33.6

public ministry, he traveled around.
