You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:34.3

Hey there, sprouts. Today is Tuesday, June 7th, 2022. This week as we start the month of June, we are celebrating the patron saints of summer.

0:39.4

Yesterday we talked about patron saints of good weather and swimming. and today we are in talk about the patron saint of travel or of travelers. So if you have big travel plans

0:47.9

this summer, whether they are road trips or anything else or just trips to the park down the street. Let's all remember the patron saint

0:57.6

of travelers who is St. Christopher. Now, St. Christopher is an interesting saint because most of what we

1:05.4

know about him is legend. We don't really know specific facts about who he was or where he was born. But as with

1:13.5

all saints in our church that are kind of legend based, we can trust in two things. Number one,

1:20.8

that this probably was sort of somehow based on a real person, that there really was a St. Christopher. In fact,

1:28.3

many people think he was a martyr. And number two, that this is a story that can really

1:34.3

teach us something beautiful. And whether these details happen exactly as we hear in the story

1:43.1

or not, we know that it is a good story for us to learn something

1:46.8

from and for us to be inspired as we travel and as we travel to heaven. So the legend of St. Christopher

1:54.9

goes like this. St. Christopher was a man from Cana and he was also a very tall, very strong man.

2:04.7

In fact, many people thought he was the tallest and strongest man they had ever seen.

2:09.6

And Christopher became very, very proud because he knew that he was stronger and taller than anyone else.

2:16.1

He decided that he would only serve the most

2:19.6

powerful king. So he sought out the most powerful king in the region and he served that person.

2:27.6

But then he noticed that this king, when the devil was mentioned, he would shudder in fear. So Christopher thought, well,

2:38.4

if this king is afraid of the devil, then the devil must be stronger than him. And since I am the

2:45.4

strongest servant, I should go and serve the devil. So he wandered around for a few years, and finally, he encountered a band of murderers and robbers.

2:55.6

They were just terrible, despicable people.

2:58.6

And he decided that the leader of this band of robbers must be the devil.
