Summary

This is our Wednesday show, where we niche down to a single topic, think about a question and unpack the rest. This week, Natasha and Alex crawled through the Metaverse, leaning on Facebook's latest earnings and Microsoft's newest appetite as somewhat of a map. Our question, after much thinking, gets into the heart of what the Metaverse is built for: Will the metaverse be for work, or for play?  We’re not picking sides, necessarily, but exploring how two companies within Big Tech are staking bets in the digital world, and how we think those bets will shake out long term for them and the startups that look up to them. Facebook seems to be taking a work-styled approach, Microsoft is big in games, and startups are trying a host of different methods for building our digital next. Who is right? Who will win? And how will we get here? That's what we wanted to dive into. The Satya Nadella interview that we mentioned is here, as well as Natasha's piece on virtual HQs.  Credits: Equity is produced by Theresa Loconsolo with editing by Kell. Bryce Durbin is our Illustrator. We'd also like to thank the audience development team and Henry Pickavet, who manages TechCrunch audio products. Learn more about your ad choices. 0:39.6

This is going to be the numbers, yes, and the nuance behind the the headlines we're literally gonna nail it we

0:45.2

wrote that and we've used it a lot and today finally we live up to our own expectations

0:50.6

in fact I think we over index on new nuance this episode because

0:54.4

the metaverse is like is nuanced in its core. So I mean yeah probably the most

0:58.8

equity topic and we're finally going to get past talking about it as just like a

1:02.1

re-brandt which feels refreshing.

1:04.0

I want to walk us through what we're going to be talking about today and then we can jump

1:07.8

into definitions, stuff like that.

1:10.0

So I mean as I said we're going to first start off by defining the Metiverse and kind of ask some of our big questions about it still and then

1:16.0

walk through two news items first Facebook's earnings and what that means for

1:20.1

its version of building the Metaverse.

1:22.6

Then we're going to go to Microsoft,
