You hear about this dream cruise, which turned into a nightmare with this 80-year-old left behind to die in a deserted island.

This was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime ended in an unthinkable tragedy, raising some pretty big questions about how a cruise line could have left an 80-year-old behind on a remote island.

So an Australian woman, who was a, she was a solo traveler on an $80,000, 60-day cruise around Australia.

She was found dead on the very first stop of her journey.

Now authorities are investigating how this could have possibly happened

and whether her death could have been prevented. So the ship, which is called the Coral Adventurer, had just left, is it Cairns? Yeah, something like that. You can't say it different ways, yeah. Anyway, so it left the city on Friday. Its first stop on Saturday was the beautiful and remote lizard island. Part of the Great Barrier Reef. Passengers were taken to the island for activities like snorkeling and hiking.

So this 80-year-old woman was reportedly part of a group hiking on the island's highest point,

a summit called Cook's Look.

It's believed that during the hikes needed to stop and rest and somehow got lost on her way back down.

And a shocking turn of events, the rest of the group returned to the ship, and the vessel

departed, left the woman behind.

And the most troubling part of the story is the timeline.

So the woman was not reported missing until Saturday night, long after the ship had already sailed away.

This critical delay is now a central focus on the investigation here.

Eye witnesses on a nearby yacht who are listening to the emergency radio have added to the mystery.

They told reporters they heard the cruise ship conducting head counts for the snorkelers, but they think a proper headcount may not have been done at all.
