Adroxychloroquine is one of the oldest drugs available.

It's a synthetic form of quinine, the stuff in tonic water, long used as an anti-malaria

medication.

In the US, it's mainly used to treat patients with dangerous autoimmune disorders, such as

lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

These diseases aren't only deadly, they're terrible.

The body literally attacks itself, and symptoms can happen at any time, anywhere.

The word lupus itself derives from the Latin word for wolf, a nod to the cunning and

deadliness of the disease, and of the feared invokes.

Lupus disproportionately affects women, and in particular, women of color.

People who are already less likely to have access to healthcare in our society as a function

of structural racism and the poverty it causes, which we discussed on Friday.

As President Trump recklessly promoted hydroxychloroquine from the White House podium, he said something

that captures the challenge that so many people are having right now.
