Two years ago, the Center for Disease Control conducted a day-long seminar dedicated to a

grim milestone, the 100th anniversary of the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, an outbreak that

killed 40 million people around the globe.

The question on the table was whether something like it could ever happen again.

For many, the answer was surely not, given the advances in medical science and public health.

But one of the speakers at the seminar, Dr. Luciana Borrio, had a very different view.

Are we ready to respond to a pandemic, she asked?

I fear the answer is no.

At the time Borrio served on a global health team at President Trump's National Security

Council that just days later would be dissolved, and her fears today seem more than justified,

as the death toll from COVID-19 shoots up day after day.
