I'm John Batchel with my good colleague Richard Epstein, the 2025 recipient of the Henry Toby Award for helping me understand the Supreme Court.

Because right now, the headline, Donald Trump asked Supreme Court to let him fire Governor Lisa Cook.

Subhead, governor's legal team asked court to reject requests as her removal, quote, would threaten our nation's economic stability. I'm unfamiliar with the process.

The federal district judge, I believe, said that Ms. Cook is not fired, and therefore she was a participant and a voter in the decision made by the Federal Reserve within these last hours.

Now, the Trump administration wants to go right to the Supreme Court.

Is that a process that's normal?

No, it's not a process that's normal, which is why it's Donald Trump's process.

Normal, you have to go through an intermediate court, probably in the District of Columbia, in order to make this thing go.

And the question is, who's the greater threat to the legal system?

And the answer is it's not Lisa Cook.

She was an innocuous, not very visible member of the Federal Reserve Board.
