What's up everyone? Welcome back to the show. Now this is a thing that I hope you never have to do but it's still something that we need to talk about. Can you compost a tomato?

So by the end of the season, and I know we're not there yet, but I figured I'd get this one out of the way,

tomatoes are gonna have a lot of issues, right?

Your tomatoes, all the good ones you've already harvested, you still have

a lot of stuff that is ready to get out of the garden. Certainly get out of your beds. And the question

then becomes, what do you do with all of that stuff? Can you compost all those

tomato vines, maybe some of the less attractive tomatoes that you didn't end up

harvesting? So a lot of people will say they would never compost tomato vines.

And the reason why is because they might spread disease and then other people will say,

you know what, it's actually a disgrace to send your tomato vines into the

landfill where they mix with all sorts of things and basically do nothing productive

for the earth and instead of just putting them in the compost and actually

returning them back to your garden.

And so the question is kind of always, it depends, right?

It's going to acidify your compost heap a little bit and your compost might also spring forth some

volunteer tomatoes when the weather starts to warm in the spring as well and if you

think that's a problem well that's up to you for me a volunteer tomato is just a tomato that started on its own and I can then

take that out into the garden and start growing with it kind of like the

experiment I did where I just planted an actual

tomato in the ground. That ended up being the the godfather if you will or the

godmother of 10 plus tomatoes I took off in early spring that were beautiful, juicy, and ripe.

So I'm certainly a fan of that volunteer tomato strategy.
