Kevin Espertu here joined by Liz Zorab, a homesteader from the UK and the author of grounded

a gardener's journey to abundance and self-sufficiency. We were talking in sort of comparing our

0:27.9

climates with Liz and it's quite different in the UK versus San Diego, California. You're

0:33.9

in the middle of a storm right now and we haven't had a rain this entire month. I don't

0:39.3

think and we've had our driest, we've had our driest February in 165 years. I'd love to split

0:47.5

the difference with you if we could but unfortunately we can't manipulate the ecosystem like that.

0:52.1

And speaking of, how do you approach managing the garden in your climate and your ecosystem?

1:01.1

So we've been very fortunate in the place that we're in right now. We are about a quarter

1:08.1

a mile from a tidal river which means that we get the warmth of the Gulf Stream, comes across

1:14.1

the Atlantic, warns the water that comes up the stream and our little enclave here is

1:21.1

really quite warm. We're about two degrees Fahrenheit warmer on this side of the river to

1:29.1

the other side of the river. I'm not quite sure why, but we are. And it means that we've

1:35.1

been able to build a garden that has different pockets in it. We're on eight tenths of an

1:44.1

acre, which is four fifths of an acre. And across that there are different patches,

1:52.1

some hold the frost, others are particularly windy. And others are, I get very still and quite

2:00.1

humid and because we're so close to the water, it is a very humid environment, but not humid

2:07.1

hot except for a very short amount of time in the summer. It's just humid and cold for quite a

2:15.1

lot of the year. And I think as I was saying before, we don't get this very, very cold.

2:21.1

We don't get an extreme cold here. So there's quite nice even keel. And I was listening to

2:28.1

Charles Dozing talk about the climate in the UK as being, as an oceanic temperate climate.

2:36.1

So we get a huge amount of influence from being surrounded by water. And as I said, in this
