Summary

This week I’m joined by Samantha Dalton—therapist, co-host of the Nuance Needed podcast, and the voice behind @sam.the.therapistt on Instagram. Our conversation centers loosely on community and friendship after leaving high-demand religion, but we cover a lot of ground: the misuse of therapy-speak (including how “trauma dumping” gets weaponized), emotional immaturity among women raised in sheltered religious environments like Mormonism, and even a little analysis of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. It’s one of those episodes that left me thinking long after we stopped recording. Yes, ma'am. Which is absolutely phenomenal. We were just talking about it. Talking about the need, the great need for nuance. And how nuance is not always sexy. No. It's not always gravy, but it is very important.

0:45.8

No. My life's mission was meant to be not sexy. That was... It's very aligned with your life

0:52.3

mission. That's my purpose. I love it. I can't wait to talk to you. It's very aligned with your life-mission.

0:56.5

So I love it.

0:57.8

I can't wait to talk to you.

1:00.8

We are going to be basing our conversation.

1:07.7

I would say very loosely around community and friendships slash relationships, which I think is very relevant for reconstructing post high demand religion.

1:12.2

So we're going to be talking about a lot of those topics and we'll see what else

1:15.4

makes its way in because we've already been chatting.

1:18.5

And I think we have a lot to talk about.

1:20.1

We have thoughts.

1:20.7

We have thoughts.

1:21.7

One thing about us is we have thoughts.

1:24.1

Also, Sam brought me a swig.

1:25.5

So thank you for that.

1:26.2

I did.

1:26.6

If you see us with our swag. Well, part of it, part of it is because I moved from Utah. I mean, you know this, but

1:34.0

you don't. I moved from Utah six months ago. And today, well, last night was my first time back

1:40.1

in six months. Oh, I didn't know that. Yeah. I have it. This is the first time back. So you were

1:44.6

missing your swag. Yeah. Gotta do it. Yeah. Gotta do it. Because that doesn't exist anywhere else.
