Houston, we have a podcast. Welcome to the official podcast of the NASA Johnson Space Center,

0:05.1

Episode 379, Commercial Lunar Space Suits. I'm Dane Turner, and I'll be your host today. On this

0:11.6

podcast, we bring in the experts, scientists, engineers, and astronauts, all to let you know what's

0:16.1

going on in the world of human spaceflight and more. More than 50 years ago, humans went to the moon under NASA's Apollo program.

0:23.7

We've all seen photos and video taken of the astronauts in big white suits hopping around

0:28.3

on the lunar surface.

0:29.8

These suits got the job done, allowing the astronauts to conduct the science they were tasked

0:34.1

to do, and we learned quite a bit from the Apollo astronauts on how to improve suits for the next time humans set foot on the lunar surface.

0:41.3

With humans exploring the Lunar South Pole for the first time during the Artemis 3 mission, astronauts will need new suits on the cutting edge of technology.

0:49.3

The new space suits will enable astronauts to conduct extensive lunar science while providing increased flexibility, mobility, and safety like never before to withstand the harsh environment of the lunar south pole.

1:03.0

Leading the way to develop the tools of the Artemis Surface missions is NASA's extravehicular activity and Surface Mobility Program, or EHP.

1:11.9

They are working with U.S. commercial partners to develop spacesuits, lunar tools, and lunar

1:17.2

rovers.

1:18.4

We'll explore each of these priorities with the program on Houston.

1:21.6

We have a podcast, starting with today's episode on the spacesuits.

1:25.1

On this episode, we have NASA's Extravehicular activity, or EVA, development

1:30.0

project manager, Jesse Buffington, and the executive vice president and EVA program manager

1:35.8

at Axiom Space, Russell Ralston, to tell us more about how Axiom Space is developing the

1:41.5

Axiom Exhibicular Mobility Unit or AXEMU suit that Artemis

1:46.1

astronauts will use when they step foot on the moon again during the Artemis 3 mission. Let's suit up.
