Richard, what's the best second in motorsport history, would you say?

What about Sterling Moss's second in the World Championship in 1958, perhaps?

Or maybe, Jill Villeneuve's second at Dijon in 1979, wheelbanging with René Arnau.

Well, this is going to be a bit controversial, maybe even heretical. But I'd say

Fangio's second place in the 1955 Milamilia, the legendary race in which his Mercedes teammate,

Stirling Moss, won his most famous victory. But he had the assistance of Dennis Jenkinson as

his navigator, very famously,

to give him warning of hazards. Fangeau was driving the same sort of a Mercedes all by

himself, and he drove the last 300 miles on seven of the car's eight cylinders after a

fuel injection pipe fractured somewhere between Florence and Sienna. That's my favourite second place.

That's a very brave, slightly arcane and very typical of you choice, I would say.
