Summary

Todd Brown continues telling his story of recovery as an ex-member of the independent sect of Sufism called Sufi Dayemi Tariqat. He describes the abuse he endured from the guru who continually belittled Todd for not living up to binary gender norms. Todd speaks openly about how he struggled with his homosexuality within the group and explains what led him to finally leave the community just a few months ago. Before You Go: Rachel examines how the hierarchical nature of controlling relationships leads to victims internalizing blame and unjustly taking responsibility for the negative actions of those in power. And now for today. You get to hear the second part of my conversation with Todd Brown.

0:51.1

He has one of these stories where we probably could have talked for hours, but we had to

0:56.8

limit it because you probably didn't want to sit down to listen to something for hours and hours.

1:02.6

He was involved in an offshoot Sufi community in Illinois called the Diamit Tarikot for 23 years. And he worked as a baker at their

1:18.1

business during that time. So he was very, very involved. Since leaving the group in March of just this

1:25.8

year, he has come out again as a gay man, and he's also

1:33.6

returned to school to complete a graduate degree in counseling. He hopes to earn a PhD and help

1:41.4

people leave coercive environments. And he's a nice guy. And I really appreciate

1:48.0

him telling his story. He mentioned last time this was the first podcast he had been on where he

1:55.5

was actually talking about what happened to him. It's not an easy thing. It takes a lot of bravery. And I give him

2:02.8

a lot of credit. Here's Todd now.

2:13.9

So moving ahead then, during the last episode, we were talking about when you first walked into your first meeting with this particular group.

2:23.8

Are there pieces that you wanted to share from before that that led you up to wanting or being open to going to that meeting?

2:31.8

So I was in Arizona. I was dealing with PTSD.

2:35.0

I was,

2:35.6

things were sort of out in the open. And I had a chance to sort of start over. Like I worked at Kmart and I, I just was like, okay, get myself back. I was off alcohol and drugs. I was, I went as, it was in a halfway house for a while. And I was, you know, I was on the right track.
