Hey there's Dan. As we started working on season two of this podcast, there was one topic, it seemed like we just had to look at.

Insulin. People had sent in some crazy tough stories about how they were dealing with the insane prices and

insulin is iconic. Type 1 diabetics need it to survive and prices have doubled,

tripled more.

And at the same time, I wondered,

there are stories about insulin prices everywhere.

Would we really have something to add,

something that wasn't just more enraging and

terrifying and depressing? The answer was, oh yeah. The story of

insulin's discovery almost a hundred years ago is wild.

It involves Canadian scientists swatting away flies, making deals with dog nappers,

and possibly beating each other up.

And it has a lot to teach us about how we got here.

And the things people are doing today in response to those crazy prices,

they are surprising and nerdy and kind of hopeful.

There is nothing that prevents a patient from manufacturing a drug for himself. You know, you can inject yourself with whatever you want.

It's somewhere in the ballpark of what it takes to brew a really good beer.

And yeah it is a lot of, but diabetes is for the week.

So we are holding this story for a week to give people a chance to take a break.

Maybe get out of town, eat some hot dogs, whatever.
