What the U.S. Department of Education is essentially doing, it's officially notifying Columbia University

that it here has violated anti-discrimination laws,

alleging that the university falls below the standards of accreditation by deliberately acting indifferent towards harassment of Jewish students on campus.

Of course, for well over a year now, Columbia University has been center stage for the debate about student protests relating to the Middle East.

Accreditation, which is carried out by nonprofit organizations, is required for university

students to gain access to federal funds, including grants and loans, according to Columbia's

website.

CNN has reached out to the Ivy League School for comment.
