Summary

Guest co-host Todd Rose joins Ravi to discuss America’s collective illusions and how it has driven people into reflexive positions that may not map to their (or the rest of the country’s) privately held views. They tackle the Israel and Hamas war, the media’s role in driving polarization, the 2024 election, and a new study by the New York Times on how college admissions offices were wrong to turn away from objective measures. Hey, good to be here. Well, we have a couple of things

0:22.7

on our agenda, including perceptions of Israel, Palestine, collective illusions around the media and

0:29.0

media bias, standardized testing. But before we do any of that, I've been thinking about an earlier

0:34.2

conversation you and I had because we talked about how from some of your

0:39.0

data and just from some common sense, we were talking about how CEOs don't want to take positions

0:44.6

on issues of national concern, like that have nothing to do with their products. And you were saying

0:51.9

that both your data, but also the conversations you have for CEOs,

0:55.8

they don't want to take these positions.

0:57.4

The public also doesn't want them to take these positions.

1:00.5

And I've been thinking about this because of this Harvard situation where Harvard got itself

1:05.2

in a bind, Harvard, UPN, MIT, I mean, county organization where these university presidents have gotten, I think,

1:15.7

like as some guests on this podcast would say, they've kind of set a standard where they

1:19.6

should be commenting on a lot of things. And then when they, I think, conspicuously didn't

1:23.8

on the Israel-Palestine issues, it attracted a lot of attention. I just am curious

1:29.8

to what your perspective is on this, because it seems to be exactly what we were talking about the

1:33.3

last time we started. It's exactly right. I mean, there's a great op-ed by a colleague of mine,
