| 0:44.0 | You say that when people would visit your office and see portraits of the first date on your conference room wall, |
| 0:49.8 | people were often surprised because they assumed that you were the first black South Carolinian elected to Congress. |
| 0:55.9 | Was that the catalyst for writing this book? |
| 0:58.3 | It was. And I had just finished my, or just released, my memoir. |
| 1:06.5 | And so one particular episode that led me to open a conversation with my staff. |
| 1:13.6 | And I said to them, my next book is going to be about those eight people. |
| 1:19.0 | And I started writing it just to inform about their existence and what happened, |
| 1:26.7 | doing their service. |
| 1:28.8 | And then the election of 2020 came. |
| 1:31.4 | And the aftermath of that election led me to start over and rewrite the book to me a little |
| 1:38.3 | more instructive rather than just informative. |
| 1:42.5 | Reconstruction to me is among the most fascinating chapters of American history. |
