My name is Matthew and it's wonderful to have you joining me tonight as we remember

that God is close to the broken-hearted.

Tonight, we will be hearing about the nearness and protection of our Lord

when we are broken-hearted and crushed in spirit.

The main passage of Scripture that will be showing us this aspect of God is Psalm 34, 17 to 19, which reads,

The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.

He rescues them from all their troubles.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.

The words of this Psalm of David were written directly after a time

where he experienced emotional turmoil,

a matter of life and death.

David wrote this psalm after he pretended to be insane in front of the Philistines,

who recognized him and perhaps wanted to kill him.

King Saul was fiercely hunting David,

for he was jealous of David's military success and God's care over him.
