Hey everybody welcome back to cold case murder mysteries. I'm your host Ryan Kraus returning for a comprehensive psychological examination of the events surrounding

the vicious unsolved murder of 19-year-old University of North Carolina student Faith Hedgepath

who was bludgeoned and raped in a bedroom at her apartment.

It was a crime that shocked the college community, a savage beating and sexual assault delivered

by an unknown predator who crept inside her home in the middle of the

night as she slept, and then vanished into the night, never seen again.

It's every young woman's worst nightmare. Someone suddenly grabs you in the darkness,

in your own bed where you're helpless to their approach. And before you know it, the man is taking what he wants up to and including your life.

Men like Richard Ramirez or Joseph James De Angelo who could strike anywhere or at any time.

They are the monsters in our shadows, the demons roving the night.

But what's worse?

Perhaps almost incomprehensible for most, is when the monster has been in your home all

along, sitting beside you, perhaps as a partner of some kind, maybe as a son, a sibling.

It could even be your best friend. You just never know. Until something happens. We don't know what goes on inside

other people's heads. We know what they tell us, and if it seems disingenuous we tend to average what we've heard with

the disparity of what we see and allow our perception to let the final judgment fall somewhere

in the middle.

Balance.

We want to be realistic, yet hopeful.

But one of the places where our intuition can go badly wrong

and trying to dissect someone else's mind state is in areas where

we ourselves are ignorant of how we're indirectly causing others to suffer.
