holds a lot of appeal, but the reality is

complicated. If the system works perfectly, then every carbon credit cancels out a real ton of

CO2 that is emitted. And when the system doesn't work perfectly, you end up with a net increase

in CO2 emissions. Carbon offset markets have been plagued by scandal and failure for years.

Right now the offset market is broken, so it's really hard for buyers of offsets to

filter out what are the real credits and what are the false credits.

A new nonprofit wants to buy emissions permits

from regulated markets and lock them away

so other polluters can't buy and use them.

And each permit you take out is effectively reducing the cap.
