Summary

Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Frank McAvennie from season one.

In part one, Frank describes his fairytale rise to stardom. A random invitation got him playing with Johnstone Burgh, then a snub by Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld made him determined to succeed. St Mirren came calling, and after several impressive seasons he went south to join Luton, but ended up being signed by John Lyall for West Ham. Soon he was spearheading the Hammers attack with Tony Cottee, fed by the great Alan Devonshire.

Frank's done one of two silly things in his life,

but then again, so have I.

What I didn't like, given that when I watched him,

I always thought he was a footballer of Supreme Finishing,

real intelligence, great movement.

I didn't like the fact that his social life had pigeonholed him,

and that everybody only thought of him as a party boy,

whereas in fact he's a bright football man, very good storyteller, funny, I always like funny.

And what we all felt was that he could take us into that incredible season when West Ham, not the West Ham of Bobmie

or Martin Peters or Harry Rednap, the West Ham of John Lyle finished higher than that club was ever
