back to season 2015 2016.

This is what I had to say about it back then.

I want to make an admission now which won't play well in some parts north of the border.

But in 1990 during the World Cup semi-final between England and West Germany,

when Chris Waddell very nearly chipped Bodo Ilgner and the German goal,

but the ball came back off the woodwork.

Even as a proud Scott, I so wanted it to go in.

At that stage, Chris Wardle to me seemed like Britain's version of Michael Laudrop.

The two of them are tall, very big athletic

physiques, but they would glide past footballers A, as if they were on roller skates

and B, as if they had the same low center of gravity as a Ramiro or a Peli or a Maradon or a messy.

I thought Wardle was magical to look at and what some of you who are younger won't know is that when he moved to Marseille after dazzling at Newcastle

catching my attention there and then dazzling again at spurs as far as I was concerned.

There wasn't non-stop sky television or YouTube internet in order to keep up with the way he was playing.

So from intermittent television clips and from the written press,

what it appeared to me that he was playing even more brilliantly in France than he had in England

and that he was a prince amongst poppers in the French League.

Over the years we've shared conversations about skills development, about what he does and

doesn't think about great footballers, modern footballers.

So we knew we had to go and talk to him and when he welcomed us to his house, going up the stairs to his private room where there

are football shirts framed from every year of his long career from famous people from dozens of countries.
