In episode #4 of CJ's Reel Southern Podcast, Chad Johnson kicks things off with a July fishing report from the White and Norfolk Rivers, highlighting the sulfur hatch and prime hopper season. The transition from sulfur in the evening to hoppers during the day opens up a ton of topwater opportunities, while nymphing with girdle bugs and pheasant tails remains productive. Chad shares fly suggestions like the Fat Albert, Psycho Ant, PMX, and two-bit hookers—solid patterns for the Ozark summer bite. The brief segment wraps with Diamond State Fly Shop's usual shoutout, plugging tying nights and their new podcast, Guide Talk.
The rest of the episode shifts into an intimate, storytelling-driven conversation with longtime friend and fellow guide Ben Levin. Together, they reflect on youth fly fishing competitions, the influence of legends like Dave Whitlock, and their early guiding experiences across the Ozarks, Idaho, Chile, and beyond. Chad and Ben trade heartfelt stories and fishing lessons from Whitlock himself—ranging from barefoot stream canoeing to master-level finesse casting. Packed with insight, nostalgia, and a touch of humor, this episode honors mentorship, deep friendships, and the never-ending journey of learning in fly fishing.

| 1:02.2 | Sulfur is going to be a big player. |
| 1:04.3 | And we're also going to kind of transition into hopper fishing. |
| 1:09.1 | So a lot of dry fly opportunities, top water opportunities. Yep. Yep. Hopper morning, |
| 1:13.7 | sulfur evenings kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah. That's awesome. As we get later into July, I like to |
| 1:19.5 | kind of stick a little bit more to those hopper patterns if I can. Yes. Those early July fish can get |
| 1:27.1 | a little worked over on the sulfurs. They can. Yeah. Although it can still be really good. Oh, no, obviously. And you can find fresh fish and stuff. But if you get away from where those bugs are coming off so big, the hopper bite's good. Yes, exactly. I like to have a couple rods in my boat. Like a dry fly rod, hopper rod, maybe a hopper dropper rod. I fish that way today, yeah. And then kind of pounding banks with nymphs in the afternoon, too. Yep. Girdle bugs, that type thing. Yeah, throw a dropper off the bottom of it. Usually a sulfur nymph or something. Yep. Fetheasant tail. Nothing special. Yeah. Branchy. Yeah. Yeah. That can be really good, really effective. Yep. Super fun. So kind of a lot to do. There is a lot. Like on the white. Yeah. You know, in Norfolk. Yeah. I think it's one. It was kind of transitioning. You can do one or the other. |
| 2:21.4 | You can play. Like on the white. Yeah. You know, in Norfolk. Yeah. I think it's one. |
| 2:18.0 | It's kind of transitioning. You can do one or the other. You can play with those more delicate drives. Mm-hmm. Or you can go slop, phone along the banks. With us, depending on our customers. Yeah. A lot of times. Or just what I want to do, you know. I mean, obviously. Sometimes that's kind of nice to get down the river. |
| 2:34.2 | And what the weather's asking. |
| 2:36.1 | And water conditions and stuff like that too. But it looks like we're setting up for a pretty good hopper season on the white. I feel like flow wise, we never know. But it looks good. I mean, the lake is full. They're starting to flow. It looks like they'll flow right on through them. It'll take them a while to get that water out of the lake. So we should have water for the summer. Yes. Yeah. Which is fun. And I mean... Oh, dude. And that summer streamer bite can be fun, too, if you get the right days. That waters everything during the summer. |
| 3:08.7 | Yeah. |
| 3:08.9 | For sure. |
| 3:09.5 | It really, it's just like during the winter. I mean, we really, it's the lifeline. Yeah. Yeah. So, like getting downriver a little bit, getting away from some other people, and their own delicate dries and hotspot and good banks. Yeah. With hoppers and girdlebugs is kind of a favorite of mine. |
