Summary

Today, Carl and Todd engage in a thought-provoking discussion about the difficult issue of church discipline. They explore the historical context of church discipline, its necessity for maintaining the integrity of the church, and the challenges pastors face in implementing it. With personal anecdotes and theological insights, they shed light on how discipline serves not only the church community but also the individual believer.  The church disciplines for three reasons, one of which is the recovery of the offender…the second reason is it sends a message to members of the church and to those outside of the church that certain behaviors, certain opinions are not tolerable…the third reason and, I think, perhaps the most important one is it vindicates the name of Christ in public. – Carl Trueman Tune in for a deep dive into a topic that often goes unaddressed in many congregations!

Welcome to Mortification of Spin, a casual conversation about things that count with Carl Truman and Todd Pruitt, a podcast of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. My name is Todd Pruitt.

You know, Rudy, you know, that flawless historical record.

And every day when I turn down the driveway, I see the beautiful golden dome ahead of me,

1:42.1

which of course has the statue of Mary on top of it.

1:46.0

So it's both a beautiful experience, but also a reminder of why I could never be a Roman Catholic.

1:51.0

So it's been a great year.

1:53.0

I've got some very good friends there, thoroughly enjoyed it.

1:57.0

But yes, it's Catholicism has not drawn me in.

2:01.9

Well, that's good.

2:03.2

We are all happy to hear that.

2:05.9

People have been waiting on pins and needles,

2:08.5

hoping that Carl would remain firmly anchored in the truth and so far so good.

2:14.6

So we could issue a challenge to the faculty at Notre Dame to see if they can turn you.

2:22.9

The irony is I think that the faculty I hang around with are the most conservative Catholics on campus.

2:29.3

Because, you know, as Machen points out in Christianity and liberalism, you know, the believers in the

2:36.6

supernatural in terms of the Christian faith often have more in common despite their fundamentally

2:43.5

ecclesiastical differences than we do with those who have the name Protestant, for example,

2:49.0

but deny the supernatural.
