He's trying to ransom captives, which we know is a great value in Judaism.

And he comes to the river Ghanai, and he

needs to cross this river and get it to split for him in order to escape, to accomplish his mission.

But when requesting that the river Gina or Ghanai split, he acknowledges that this should just be a

one-time thing. You can't count on miracles in your

daily life. But he makes the request, and he gets it. He gets to cross with the captives, and the captives escape safely. But then a man carrying wheat has a heavy burden. He also asks for the river to be split, and it does. And then an Arab merchant comes back and says, well, why not for me, I also need the river to split.
