Summary

In this episode, we are going to dive into the medical condition known as Chronic Mesenteric Ischemia. This is a significant health issue characterized by a reduction in the blood flow to the intestines. As a result of this diminished blood supply, individuals suffering from this condition often experience a range of symptoms, most notably abdominal pain and a loss of weight.

Throughout the course of our discussion, we'll be tackling the various causes of this complex condition, exploring the different methods of diagnosis, and examining the available treatment options. We will also be placing a heavy emphasis on early intervention in order to maximize the chances of a successful treatment and recovery.

Join Dr. Niket Sonpal, who will guide us through this complex medical condition.

Now I love consistency and one of the things we're going to be doing is finishing off this topic of major conditions you may see that are going to revolve around vascular issues and the GI tract.

0:11.0

Now we've talked about superior mesenteric artery

0:13.1

arteries syndromes, we've talked about celiac artery compression, we've even

0:16.9

talked about the very dangerous and ever famous acute mesenteric

ischemia. But if you listen to last week's podcast, there are two other conditions

0:23.7

that we're going to discuss. The first is chronic mesenterecemia, which is likened to angina

of the GI tract, and then ischemic kaleidus, which is kind of the least concerning but the most common of all of them

also known as intestinal angina, is basically going to be a condition

1:15.6

in which diffuse severe atherosclerotic narrowing of the celiac, the SMA, and a large number of vessels in the gut are so narrowed that every time the person eats

1:26.9

They get severe symptoms and these symptoms lead to some very specific findings that are going to be almost path in

1:32.8

mnemonic for you to know the diagnosis.

1:35.3

See, the first part of the diagnosis

1:37.0

is to understand the actual nature of the mesentery.

1:40.2

Now, a lot of people don't have symptoms,

1:42.0

and the reason why is that the mesenterecature has a ton of extensive

1:45.8

collaterals. So when people have intestinal angina and they present with pain, it's almost always going to be after eating.
