One of my favorite things to do as a priest is to journey with our brothers and sisters as they explore becoming Catholic in the RCIA program.

The oddity is that oftentimes those who come into the church are the best educated Catholics that

there are.

It seems that what we need is something like RCIA for Catholics, for those of us who've

grown up with the faith and have never really learned it.

So I invite you to join those coming into the church as they learn about the beauty of our faith

and hope as well that it will help to draw you ever closer to the God

who is truth and love.

We are going to tonight try to tackle the anointing of the sick.

Let's do a little quick background, and then we'll dive into these questions, and I think

we'll apply all this together.

I did not list

the section in the catechism, but just so that you have it there as a reference, it's paragraphs

1499 to 1532. Those would be helpful to read. This is another place where I can't say this often

enough, but the catechism is not dry reading. It may be dense at times, but especially

when you're getting into things like this, it's very helpful. So I just want to continue to

encourage people to go back to it and to go back to it with your Bible, because it's repeatedly

footnoted to Scripture. I want to look at this coming Sunday's gospel. One of the reasons

why I wanted to do this sacrament this week, because I think this helps set a context for the topic.
