He's a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit and is currently the executive director of a nonprofit organization called Acts 29,

which exists to work with pastors on their teams to transform their parish culture and reclaim the church's missionary identity.

He was ordained in 1996.

Practicing Catholics have all come to true belief in Jesus.

But why do we believe?

Was it because our parents or a teacher told us we had to believe?

Or like many converts to the faith, did we study ourselves into the faith and the church?

I know a lot of folks are trying to set us a resolution for the year to get more serious about their faith.

There's a great movement in the United States over the last 20, 25 years or so in what's called apologetics,

which isn't saying, I'm sorry about being Catholic.

Apologia in the genuine sense of the word means giving a defense or giving an explanation

for the faith.

You might remember, since we're all Catholic scripture scholars, that St. Peter reminds us

in his first letter

to always be ready to give a defense or to give an explanation for the hope that we have in Christ

something like the text for those who do apologetics. And many laymen and women have really taken
