We begin a short series on The Liturgy of the Church on this edition of Christ's The Answer.

Practicing Catholics have all heard about what the spirit of the Second Vatican Council

was supposedly about. Many misunderstandings of what the council documents actually said

resulted in many errors in how the liturgy was celebrated. Prior to being elected to the

papacy, Colonel Joseph Ratzinger had then served for over 20 years as the prefect of the congregation

for the doctrine of the faith. He wrote a defining book, The Spirit of the Liturgy, in an attempt to correct these errors

and disseminate what the church actually teaches about her liturgy.

Father Ricardo begins with an overview.

Welcome back to those of you who've been here before, and welcome to those of you who haven't.

We're going to tackle a somewhat ambitious project.

We're going to take a look at now Pope Benedict the 16th's book called The Spirit of the

Liturgy.

The Second Vatican Council back in the 1960s had really as its emphasis a set of different

points.

One of them was what's known as the universal call to holiness that the life of belonging to God

is for all of us, that it's not just for a certain dedicated few, but each one of us is called to live our life in such a way that we live it in a way that reflects the reality that we belong to God. That's what holiness is. They belong to him. One of the other points of Vatican II was the role of the laity, and in particular the role of the laity in the world.
