Steve Gregory from the KFI Newsroom is joining me right now because Steve, if I can just do a brief summary here.

0:06.8

We had an officer in Riverside County was shot in Harupa Valley last week.

0:13.8

And we found out a little bit more about the suspect.

0:18.7

The suspect we learned had a very violent history

0:21.9

and was actually, there was a bench warrant out for his arrest. The second bench warrant, I believe,

0:27.3

because he was arrested on the first bench warrant and then he was released and then he didn't

0:32.0

show up for his next sentencing trial for what would have been his third strike in California.

0:37.1

When the officer Cordero, Isaiah Cordero was his name, pulled him over for a traffic

0:43.2

stop, I don't, I don't, well, we won't know, but we don't think that he knew that he was pulling

0:48.8

over a violent criminal and somebody that was avoiding a third strike sentencing.

0:57.9

And that's when this guy shot Officer Cordero and then took off.

1:03.5

The other sheriffs responded in and there were about three dozen cars following him down the highway.

It's a coveted position in law enforcement.

1:28.8

It's one of those specialized units, typically both sheriffs and police departments. And Cordero

1:34.1

had pulled him over. And here's the thing. We don't know quite yet what the reason was he

1:40.6

was pulled over. We don't know if there was a traffic violation or it was going to be a warning of some kind.

1:46.3

But it was a pickup that this guy was driving. And so that could have also played into whether or not Cordero called, you know, wanted some sort of background on this guy or a license plate or anything like that.

2:01.7

So if he had no idea or knowledge of this individual's past or background, it was most likely,

2:08.1

law enforcement, sometimes like that, unless there's a probable cause or there's some suspicion,

2:13.3

like it looks like a vehicle that's wanted or a vehicle that was stolen, then they'll try to do some sort of a check on the plate right away.

2:21.0

But until he gets the license of the individual driving so he could go back and check that license,

2:26.3

that's when he would have been able to figure out that he had a warrant out for his arrest, an active warrant.
