I'm particularly excited that you're with us on this episode because today is the winter solstice.

Welcome to the light returning.

Ooh, Samantha, I'm ready. Me too. Especially where we live, I feel as though I moved to England

and nobody told me it has been so dark and rainy and cloudy. And gray, gray, gray, gray, gray, gray.

And that's not any dis on England. You all know how much i love england but we just haven't had

our normal sunny days here not very many we certainly have not and of course we have less like

time during the course of the day because the sun rises later and sets earlier and right now

as we move into the rest of December and January and February,

it still feels like dark, dark, dark winter. But in reality, something really wonderful is

happening that we can't see. And I'm going to talk about that in just a minute, but let me stay here on this notion of Yule,

because one of the things that I love the most about this particular holiday is that it is so deeply connected to almost every other belief system in the world. Think about Hanukkah and the

Festival of Lights in the Jewish tradition. Think about the festival of lights that go on, and I can't

pronounce, I'm not sure, the name of the holiday in the Hindu tradition in India.

And on and on and on around the world, this honoring of and deep gratitude for the coming

of the light this time of year is one of those things that helps us find common ground among

us. And I so love that. It's also in the Celtic tradition,

there's this interesting myth where at the winter solstice and six months later at the summer

solstice, there's this battle between the Holly King and the Oak King,

and one rules for half the year and one rules for the other half the year.
