If you are just getting started, if you are just getting started gardening this year and you're dumping into the world of container gardens, that's fantastic because they're one of the easiest ways to get started in the garden.

0:23.6

But what things should you consider when you do get your containers?

0:28.1

Well, the first thing you need, of course, is that container,

0:30.6

but are all containers created equal? answer of course is no to that

0:34.8

question so the first thing you have to consider is the total amount of volume that

0:39.8

that that container needs to hold for the plant that you're growing.

0:43.0

For example, something like lettuce doesn't really need more than about six inches of height

0:49.0

and usually people will plant lettuce in those like long rectangular planters that maybe holds half a cubic foot of soil or so, nothing too crazy.

0:58.4

Now if you're growing something like potatoes, well potatoes grow under the ground and so they need to have enough space to spread out,

1:28.8

something like maybe a carrot or a dycon radish., those of course are also taproot style plants. That's what we're eating and that's why we're growing them.

1:37.3

So if you're growing carrots, well carrots can be 14 inches deep based on the variety down to even just a couple inches for those

1:44.3

ball style cares. So variety selection also comes into play when deciding what

1:49.1

to grow in containers and what containers to get. Another thing to think about,

1:52.8

and I know this is a lot of information,

1:54.4

but I like to give you all the variables to consider,

1:56.8

so you can kind of build that holistic knowledge

1:59.4

and analyze those garden choices for yourself. So let's talk about material. First you have

2:06.0

something tried and true. Terracotta pots. Those are classic. You see them
